Presentation of the Integration Platform TUBi

The event began on April 20, 2017 with two introductory notes by Prof. Dr. Rita Süßmuth, former President of the German Bundestag, and by Prof. Dr. Angela Ittel, Vice President of TU Berlin for International Relations.

Internationality, mobility of students, teaching in English, research and academic exchange programs are important key words which all stand for the degree of internationalization of a university. This process has particularly been strengthened with the Bologna reform. For example since then the number of international students in Germany has doubled. More than one thousand Bachelor and Master programs have been established at German universities, and double-degree agreements have been made between TU Berlin and many international universities. Also, many German students spend one or more semester terms at a university abroad.

German universities count as very cosmopolitan; in equal measure the expectations grow what regards international exchange, dialogue, and integration of international students. In order to cope with these challenges the ZiiK of TU Berlin developed a web-based platform for the integration of international students in the course of the project Informatics and Developing Countries (German "Informatik und Entwicklungsländer") in the winter semester term 2016/2017. On that platform the topics of exchange, dialogue, and integration can be explicitly discussed and solutions be presented.

Main goal of this platform is to facilitate and support a peaceful and sustainable collaboration of everyone involved on university campus, that is students, tutors, mentors, and academic and supporting faculty, thereby providing international students from different cultures with a discussion forum that enables exactly the above mentioned kind of exchange. Furthermore, the interests of international students are thus made visible, events can be organized and discussions on current issues be facilitated, subject-specific support and training can be offered by students for students, or publications of travel accounts and impressions be published. In addition, questions about life on and around campus can be answered, for example on how to find apartments, cafes and mensas, and regarding finances and culture.

At the end of the presentation speakers and guests discussed the specifics of the implementation and benefits of the platform.
