12. IT Conference in Kabul 18.-20.12.2016

H.E. the First Lady of Afghanistan Mrs. Rula Ghani

From December 18th until 20th, the twelfth annual international IT Conference took place in Kabul. The event was hosted at the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) with technical assistance from the IT Competence Center (ITCC) Afghanistan and the Center for international and intercultural Communication (ZiiK) of the Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin), with funding from the German Federal Foreign Office and with support from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Minister of Higher Education, H.E. Prof. Farida Momand

This year’s IT conference topic was “Cyber Security”. The aim of this three-day conference was to discuss aspects of IT security with representatives of Afghan Government, authorities, universities, the Information Security Group of Afghanistan as well as international guests. On the second conference day, three workshops did take place about the topics of IT Education and Awareness, IT Security Infrastructure and Management of IT Security. The results of these workshops were presented and discussed on the third day. One of the results was that modern IT can only be implemented successfully, if, besides functional and economical aspects, IT security would be considered respectively, too. Digitalization without IT security will cause unpredictable risks and costs. This is particularly the case in countries such as Afghanistan where modern technologies are currently being employed and showing high growth rates.

Conference participants

Among the invited guests were H.E. the Afghan Minister of Higher Education, Prof. Momand, H.E. the German Ambassador in Kabul, Mr. Walter Haßmann, representatives from the Afghan Ministries of Technology and Communication, Defense, Interior Affairs and Foreign Affairs, as well as of the National Security Council and the Afghan Parliament, University Presidents and Afghan Computer Science Master graduates from TU Berlin. The conference was opened by H.E. the Afghan First Lady, Mrs. Rula Ghani, via video message.
